In this month’s feature, we asked David Weekley Homes’ Mike Funk, Building Programs Manager to share some insight on building HERS® homes for their customers.

Q: What is special about a HERS® Rated home?

A: Mike: Most builders today talk about energy efficiency, but what does that mean? How do we ensure that? A HERS®-rated home gives us the ability to understand how we’re doing and how energy efficient we really are. As the widely accepted standard, we can easily showcase where we stand. This also provides our customers with added confidence in purchasing a David Weekley home.

Q: Why should consumers ask for the HERS® Index Score on homes they are shopping for?

A: Mike: They get a better understanding of what it means to build and own an energy-efficient home and how it can benefit them immediately, but also provide long-term savings. The HERS® score gives our Team the ability to put energy efficiency into perspective for Customers.

Q: Why does David Weekley Homes choose to have their homes HERS® Rated?

A: Mike: Every day we strive to live out our purpose of Building Dreams, Enhancing Lives, therefore it’s important for us to provide the best to our Homeowners. In order to do that, the HERS® rating helps us better understand the energy features we include in a new home and the impact they have on the overall energy efficiency of the home.

Q: Why consumers should expect energy-efficient homes?

A: Mike: Energy-efficient homes are quickly becoming the standard, and buyers are expecting it. By investing in an energy-efficient home, buyers are investing in their home’s future. Additionally, with the unpredictability of energy costs at times, an energy-efficient home can protect them from rising costs.

Q: How many homes does David Weekley Homes build with HERS® per year?

A: Mike: As one of the largest privately owned home builders in the United States, we are proud to say all David Weekley homes are HERS® rated.

Q: How do you market HERS® Rated homes?

A: Mike: Anyone who walks into one of our model homes can see our Quality Room first-hand, which showcases our HERS® standards, information on what that means, along with our building science techniques and how those build a stronger home. For many of our cities, we publish the HERS® scores for our Team to use in the selling process for their individual communities. Our raters offer HERS® scores by floor plan, so our Sales Consultants can inform buyers exactly how energy efficient each specific plan is.

Q: How do your customers feel about HERS® Rated homes?

A: Mike: As an increasingly important topic, we want our customers to be fully informed. There really is no other rating or comparable process. Going beyond claims, we can show actual evidence that their energy-efficient home will help them save on utility bills every month. Between the HERS® score and ratings from ENERGY STAR, our homebuyers can be confident in choosing a David Weekley home.
