5 Easy Energy Saving Solutions

Aug 13, 2012

Saving energy is easier than you think! It may surprise you to know that by making a few changes to your home and lifestyle, you could save lots of money, improve your quality of life and do your bit to help the environment.

Here are 5 easy ways to save on energy costs.

  1. Roll out the insulation!
Can you really sit comfortably knowing dollars are escaping through your ceiling? Your home may well be insulated, but it’s important to check you have the right thickness, based on your climate. Most American homes should have between R30 and R60 insulation. Fitting proper attic insulation can save up to 20% on your heating bill.
  2. Let your home do the hard work
Getting your heating and cooling to work with you is a great way to save on energy costs. With a programmable thermostat, your heating and cooling systems needn’t work away while you’re asleep, or when no-one’s home. A well-programmed thermostat can save up to 20% on your heating and cooling costs; that’s $180 a year on average.
  3. Look for energy efficient appliances
When you’re replacing appliances, look out for ENERGY STAR rated products. An ENERGY STAR appliance will save 20% – 30% on average, when compared to the minimum government standard. Some Energy Star appliances will be more efficient than others. This is worth a thought when it comes to bigger appliances like a new dishwasher or television. Changing appliances is an ongoing energy saving solution, but it’s estimated that if everything in your home has the ENERGY STAR logo, you could save up to $1000 a year.
  4. Invest in energy saving lighting
ENERGY STAR certified fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use up to 70% less energy than standard ones. By replacing just 5 of your most used bulbs in the house, you’ll save $70 a year on average. In addition to the monetary savings, they give off less heat and so are better for the environment, and last up to 10 times longer than normal light bulbs.
