https://mattamyhomes.comIn this month’s feature, we talked with the Mattamy Homes team in the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX market about building HERS® homes for their customers.
Q: What is special about a HERS-rated home?
A: Mattamy Homes: A HERS-rated home gives homeowners the confidence that their home has been independently inspected and tested by a third party. It’s not just efficient on paper; it’s been verified to perform to a high standard. This ensures the home delivers comfort, lower energy costs, and long-term value. In fact, in our Dallas division, our new homes average a HERS score of 53, which is significantly better than a typical new home and far more efficient than a resale home.
Q: Why should consumers ask for the HERS Index Score on homes they are shopping for?
A: Mattamy Homes: The HERS Index Score is a great tool for homebuyers because it shows how efficiently a home is built. A lower score means the home uses less energy, which can lead to lower monthly utility bills. It can also add resale value and may even help with insurance savings. It’s a simple way to get a better understanding of how a home will perform over time, something worth asking about when you’re shopping.
Q: Why does Mattamy Homes choose to have their homes HERS Rated?
A: Mattamy Homes: At Mattamy Homes, sustainability is one of our core values. We go beyond code requirements to make sure our homes are both affordable and energy-efficient. We invest in keeping detailed records and performance data so we can better understand how our homes are performing and identify opportunities to keep improving. Rating every home helps us stay consistent, transparent, and focused on delivering lasting value to our homeowners.
Q: Why should consumers expect energy-efficient homes?
A: Mattamy Homes: With rising energy demands and growing environmental concerns, energy efficiency has become the new standard, not just a bonus feature. As builders, we have a responsibility to deliver homes that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower energy costs, and support a more sustainable future. It’s about building smarter, more comfortable homes that are better for our customers and better for the planet.
Q: How many homes does Mattamy Homes build with HERS per year?
A: Mattamy Homes: In the DFW division, Mattamy Homes rated 310 homes in 2024. For 2025, we’re on track to complete around 500 rated homes. We’re committed to having 100% of our homes HERS rated, reflecting our dedication to quality, accountability, and energy performance.
Q: How do you market HERS-rated homes?
A: Mattamy Homes: We display expected HERS scores on our website by plan and community. Each of our sales counselors is equipped with tools and training to discuss estimated HERS scores and explain what they mean for our buyers. We also highlight that every home we build is expected to receive a rating as part of our standard features.
Q: How do your customers feel about HERS Rated homes?
A: Mattamy Homes: More and more buyers are seeing the value of a HERS rating, especially when comparing home options. It gives them confidence that they’re buying a well-built, efficient home. For many, it’s another layer of assurance that their builder has invested in their long-term comfort and savings.
Q: What rating company do you work with on your HERS-rated homes?
A: Mattamy Homes: We work with US-EcoLogic, and they’ve been a great partner in helping us meet and exceed our energy efficiency goals. Their third-party testing, feedback, and code expertise help us improve our construction practices, keep our HERS scores low, and choose the best ways to meet or go beyond code requirements.
