In this month’s feature, we asked Stanley Martin Homes’ Manager of Corporate Field Operations DJ Lawson to share some insight on building HERS® homes for their customers.

Q: What is special about a HERS® Rated home?

A: DJ: A HERS® rated home demonstrates Stanley Martin’s commitment to our homebuyers. Having a HERS® provider independently inspect, test, and verify that our homes are energy-efficient, more affordable to own and more comfortable supports our mission to design and build homes people love at a price they can afford.

Q: Why should consumers ask for the HERS® Index Score on homes they are shopping for?

A: DJ: It is important for Homebuyers to ask for the Home Energy Rating Score when they are shopping for a new home so they can see the value of a builder’s commitment to quality, energy efficiency, and sustainability. This is especially true when comparing new homes vs. used homes.

Q: Why does Stanley Martin Homes choose to have their homes HERS® Rated?

A: DJ: To demonstrate to our homebuyers our commitment to building an energy-efficient home which typically reduces energy consumption. This usually translates to lower utility costs and creates home value for our homebuyers, which again, touches on the affordability aspect of our mission.

Q: Why consumers should expect energy-efficient homes?

A: DJ: The products and building materials available to homebuilders today are far more advanced than what they were in the past. We feel it is our responsibility to use these products where it makes sense and the result is a more energy-efficient home. We believe today’s homebuyers want to purchase a home from a builder who is committed to decisions and build strategies focused on a commitment to preserve the environment.

Q: How many homes does Stanley Martin Homes build with HERS® per year?

A: DJ: HERS® testing has been performed at Stanley Martin Homes since 2011, as the company has expanded from a local to a regional builder it has included HERS® testing in all our divisions. In 2021, 3,700 homes are forecasted to settle which all will have HERS® ratings.

Q: How do you market HERS® Rated homes?

A: DJ: Home Energy Rating Scores and sustainable building practices are promoted throughout the Sales and Construction process. Every homeowner receives a Home Energy Rating certificate that validates this process.

Q: How do your customers feel about HERS® Rated homes?

A: DJ: Throughout the sales process they learn about the steps we take in order to build a home with their comfort in mind. They are also excited to know that their new home will consume less energy and lower their monthly utility cost.
